Prévention des risques biotechnologiques : Le Sénégal prépare son 5e rapport sur le Protocole de Carthagène
Faced with the growing challenges associated with modern biotechnologies, Senegal is thoroughly reviewing its biosafety system. The country is committed to implementing the Cartagena Protocol with the preparation of its fifth national report. Experts, authorities, and technical partners have been working on examining the collected data to consolidate the contributions of the various stakeholders.
This periodic report, required of States Parties, assesses the implementation of the legal, regulatory, and institutional framework for biosafety. It also aims to inform the international community of progress made in managing risks associated with organisms derived from modern biotechnologies, particularly GMOs. The preparation of this fifth report incorporates recent developments, including the 2022 revision of the national biosafety law.
Through this exercise, Senegal intends not only to honor its international commitments, but also to strengthen the governance and effectiveness of its national system for the prevention of biotechnological risks.
"Every four years, States Parties are required to review their legal, regulatory, technical and scientific frameworks in order to report to the international community on their commitments. And that is why, when we share this information, all parties are well informed; for example, if you look at Senegal, you must have information on what Senegal has done to meet its international commitments," explained Aliou Ndiaye, Executive Director of the National Biosafety Authority.
