Dakar accueille le premier Salon des Marchés Touristiques Africains
The first edition of the African Tourism Markets Fair (SMTA) opened this Monday, December 8, 2025, at the Doudou Ndiaye Coumba Rose National Grand Theatre in Dakar. Running until December 11, this major event brings together tourism professionals and international partners, aiming to position Senegal as a continental tourism hub.
A leading platform for African tourism
The Director General of ASPT, Adama Ndiaye, praised the strong turnout, stating that SMTA is a "benchmark platform" for uniting the forces of African tourism. He emphasized that the trade fair aims to strengthen exchanges, strategic partnerships, and the promotion of African tourism products. The event marks a shift in scale, with the ambition to move from a focus on isolated products to a network of stakeholders for integrated, inclusive, and sustainable tourism.
The SMTA is directly in line with the vision of the highest Senegalese authorities who place tourism as one of the strategic levers of economic growth by 2050.
Major announcements and national strategy
The National Authority for Public Tourism Service (INSPT) took advantage of the trade fair to announce the upcoming launch of “Senegal One”, a digital platform designed to centralize information on the Senegal destination and tourism investment opportunities.
The national strategy is structured around three fundamental axes: the development of business and event tourism, the strengthening of the Senegal brand, and the skills development of actors in the tourism value chain.
Presiding over the opening ceremony, the Minister of Culture, Crafts and Tourism, Amadou Ba, advocated for a better structuring of the African tourism sector. He noted that Africa has recorded a 9% growth in international tourist arrivals by 2025, exceeding the global average of 5%.
Morocco's ambassador, Hassan Naciri, shared the example of his country, which welcomed nearly 20 million tourists in 2025, highlighting the role of tourism as an engine of growth.
The minister congratulated Senegalese influencer Khaby Lame, recently appointed ambassador of Senegalese tourism, seeing it as a strong signal for enhancing Senegal's image internationally.
The guest countries of honor at this inaugural event are Morocco, China, Turkey, Slovenia, The Gambia, and Sweden. Authorities have called for strengthened African cooperation, particularly in air transport, to reduce costs and improve the competitiveness of tourism on the continent.
The minister concluded by assuring his commitment to bringing the recommendations from the trade fair to the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, reaffirming the objective of making tourism a central pillar of national development.

L’ASPT sera dissoute.
