4 Avril à Thiès : un collectif citoyen réclame des retombées économiques
As Senegal's Independence Day celebrations approach, scheduled for April 4, 2026, in Thiès, voices are rising in the railway capital demanding that this national event be more than just a parade and cultural activities. Meeting this Saturday in Thiès, members of the "Citizens' Assembly for Independence 2026" collective held a forum to discuss the challenges related to organizing the celebrations in the region.
Composed of politicians, members of civil society, activists and citizens, this collective hopes that the holding of the national holiday in Thiès will generate economic benefits and structuring projects for the region.
The members of the collective first welcomed the decision by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to decentralize the April 4, 2026 parade to Thiès. According to them, this choice demonstrates the importance the authorities place on this strategic region.
However, forum participants expressed concerns about the lack, so far, of concrete announcements regarding the economic benefits and development projects linked to this event.
"We do not want an April 4th that is limited to folklore," they declared, recalling that previous Independence Day celebrations held in Thiès had allowed the city to benefit from significant investments.
For this 2026 edition, the collective is calling on the authorities to go further by accompanying the event with structuring projects for the region. Among the priorities mentioned are the rehabilitation of roads and schools and the construction of a level 3 or 4 hospital to improve healthcare services in Thiès.
Members of the "Citizens' Assembly for Independence 2026" say they are waiting for clear commitments from the head of state in favor of the development of the region.
“Thiès faces several challenges. We hope that the celebration of Independence Day will be an opportunity to announce concrete projects capable of contributing to the economic and social development of the city,” they concluded.
