The 1st Commando Battalion celebrated the "Gaïndé" patron saint festival, 2026 edition, this Wednesday at the Thiès military base, marking the 63rd anniversary of one of the most emblematic elite units of the Senegalese National Army.
The ceremony took place in the presence of high-ranking military officials, veterans, institutional partners, and the families of the soldiers. In his address, the commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Marius Gana Faye, emphasized that this celebration transcends mere commemoration. "This ceremony represents a significant moment of cohesion, transmission, and loyalty to military values," he stressed, highlighting the importance of revisiting the Battalion's history, honoring veterans, and renewing commitment to serving the Nation.
Created 63 years ago, the 1st Commando Battalion has established itself as an elite unit, forged in high standards, discipline, and a spirit of sacrifice. According to the commanding officer, endurance, the central theme of this year's event, is not only a physical aptitude but also a moral virtue essential to the success of missions, both in training and in operational theaters.
Addressing the past year's performance, Lieutenant Colonel Marius Gana Faye indicated that it was generally satisfactory, marked by increased operational readiness, strengthened training capabilities, participation in several security and training missions, and a consolidation of internal cohesion. He specified that these results were the fruit of the commandos' commitment, the leadership of the commanders, and the constant support of the military hierarchy.
The commanding officer also paid a heartfelt tribute to the illustrious veterans of the Battalion, as well as to the brothers-in-arms who fell on the field of honor in defense of Senegal. "They paved the way and forged the spirit of the Battalion," he solemnly recalled.
The ceremony was punctuated by a military parade and the awarding of decorations, symbols of the Nation's recognition of the personnel distinguished for their merit, dedication and exemplary conduct.
At the end of this celebration, the 1st Commando Battalion, through its commanding officer, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the integrity of the national territory, protecting the population and responding whenever the Fatherland calls.
