Assemblée nationale : Farba Ngom brandit le Coran et jure de son innocence
The atmosphere was electric this Monday at the National Assembly. Before a large and supportive crowd, and in a chamber marked by interventions from his colleagues, notably El Malick Ndiaye, Farba Ngom delivered a dramatic statement. While the deputies were deliberating on lifting his parliamentary immunity, the elected official chose to make a strong impression by brandishing a copy of the Holy Book.
“I am showing you a complete Quran, and I am a Muslim, whether you believe it or not,” he declared solemnly. Proclaiming his innocence in the alleged embezzlement of public funds, he swore that, apart from his official income as mayor and member of parliament, and his declared rental income, he had never received a single cent from the public treasury. He concluded his oath with a striking statement: “If that is the case, may this holy book burn me in hell.”
Beyond the religious gesture, Farba Ngom denounced what he considers political persecution. "This regime wants to devour Farba. I am accused of everything, from embezzling several billion to endless persecution," he exclaimed indignantly.
Referring to the searches conducted in the Jérôme Bandiaky case, he asserted that his fields, vehicles, and homes had been thoroughly searched "in search of money and weapons," without finding anything incriminating. Finally, he criticized what he considered to be unequal treatment by the justice system, noting that after being questioned at the same time as Tahirou Sarr, the latter was released while the public prosecutor's office had reportedly chosen to appeal the decision regarding him.
