Campagne agricole : Dr Mabouba Diagne révèle la recette de l’année fructueuse

Five days, over two thousand kilometers traveled, and three regions visited. The tour led by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, Dr. Mabouba Diagne, took the government delegation to Kédougou, Tambacounda, and Kaffrine. This field mission aimed to assess the performance of the 2024-2025 agricultural season and to gather lessons learned from rural communities.

At the end of this trip, the minister praised the commitment of the local government and the resilience of the producers. "For five years now, we have been in rural areas, five days, more than 2,000 kilometers, together with the governors, prefects, and sub-prefects. Thank you so much, Mr. Governor. The local government is still very, very, very valiant and is doing brilliant work," he declared.

Dr. Mabouba Diagne highlighted the State's support through increased funding. "His Excellency the President of the Republic supported us last year with a budget of 120 billion, and this year with a record budget of 130 billion," he stated. According to him, these resources have enabled the distribution of "quality seeds in sufficient quantity and quality," as well as fertilizers "on a scale unprecedented in the history of Senegal."

The minister highlighted the joint efforts of the government and the private sector to ensure the availability of inputs. "We brought in 120,000 tons of urea on time and we fought with all my ministerial colleagues to distribute it on schedule. God also cooperated, it rained, alhamdulillah, but our brave farmers and herders also gave their all," he rejoiced.

In terms of results, estimates indicate peanut production exceeding 900,000 tons. Maize reached 634,000 tons, while cotton production increased from 15,000 to 25,000 tons, representing a 65% rise. Rice crops in the valley posted record yields, reaching up to 10 tons per hectare. As for bananas, Senegal nearly reached 112,000 tons this year.

The effects of this achievement are already being felt. "For the first time, if I'm not mistaken, in Senegal's history, we haven't imported a single kilogram of potatoes for 12 months," he stated. He sees this as a sign of the consolidation of food sovereignty.

The minister, however, reiterated the persistent challenges, particularly access to water. "I urge the authorities: let's make universal access to water for farmers and producers a priority. As long as farmers depend on rainfall, their livelihoods are highly unpredictable due to climate change." He mentioned the possibility of deep well drilling in every rural community and the creation of community-based agricultural cooperatives.

Regarding input management, Dr. Mabouba Diagne emphasized the need for proactive management: “Should we wait until August to distribute inputs? Farmers don’t have enough money by then.” He proposed the implementation of electronic accounts that would allow producers to save after selling their harvests in order to prepare for the following season.

Finally, the minister emphasized the role of women in the agricultural system. “Last year, women received 20% of the inputs. This year, I not only strongly intend to increase that, but I will also be making some changes.” He announced the creation of a commission composed exclusively of women to ensure that “the quota I am going to increase for women, women will actually receive it.”
