Following a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Sudan, Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, offered a clear-eyed analysis of his players' performance. The match, part of the knockout stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, once again highlighted the Lions' struggles at the start of the game.
Caught off guard by an early goal, Senegal had to chase the game, a situation that the Senegalese coach says he does not appreciate, while acknowledging the mental strength of his group.
"I would prefer not to be behind, but we must commend the mentality of my players. They knew how to react and go for the victory," said Pape Thiaw in the post-match press conference.
The coach, however, was keen to point out that this scenario remains risky, especially in such a demanding competition. "It's not always possible to come back from behind. We need to work on that," he insisted, emphasizing the need to correct these moments of inattention at the start of matches.
Aware of the challenges ahead, Pape Thiaw also warned of upcoming matches. He believes these difficult starts could prove costly against more clinical opponents. "It could be tough against other teams. We'll have to avoid that, especially in the knockout rounds," he concluded.
