«Ce n’est ni l’argent, ni la force matérielle qui construisent une nation» : Dr Babacar Diop rend hommage à Lat Dior

The city of Thiès commemorated, this Monday, October 27, 2025, the 139th anniversary of the death of Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop, an emblematic figure of the national resistance. In front of the Damel du Cayor memorial, the mayor of the city of Thiès, Dr. Babacar Diop, delivered a powerful speech imbued with spiritual elevation, placing national construction above material interests.

Paying tribute to the speaker who preceded him, Dr. Diop praised "the beautiful words, companions of civil peace," before recalling that the history of nations is intertwined with that of their heroes: "These admirable men were the leaders of the people, their models and their references. In truth, there is no heroism without nobility, nor greatness without sacrifice."

The mayor of Thiès emphasized faith and sincerity as the foundations of the greatness of peoples. "True heroes are men of genuine faith in a just cause, which they carry to the supreme sacrifice." He warned that nations cannot be built "on pessimism, skepticism, nihilism, or atheism of values," emphasizing that faith, trust, and optimism constitute the foundations of any sustainable society.

"The greatest defeat of our continent would be the spiritual defeat that would destroy our heroes," he added.

Calling for a moral and civic awakening, Dr. Diop affirmed that courage, a sense of sacrifice, and dignity are the true drivers of national development. "It is neither money nor material strength that builds a nation," he declared, but, he continued, "a spiritual principle that unites us in a common desire to live together, beyond our differences of language, race, and religion."

Thiès, a land of resistance and dignity, has thus renewed its commitment to perpetuating the legacy of Lat Dior, a symbol of sovereignty, courage and freedom.
