Dakar : La « guerre des pétards », un péril qui guette les foyers
During this holiday season, a worrying phenomenon is gaining momentum in several neighborhoods of Dakar, particularly in the suburbs. What residents are now calling the "firecracker war" consists of actual clashes between teenagers. While the game may seem harmless to its young participants, its consequences could prove dramatic, according to Babacar Mbaye Ngaraff, coordinator of the Synergy of Actors for the Sanitation of the Suburbs (SAABA).
Reached by Seneweb, Mr. Mbaye Ngaraff warned that the danger now extends beyond the circle of those playing the game. He lamented that these projectiles frequently hit homes, posing a real threat of house fires. The warning is all the more serious because a firecracker landing on a gas cylinder, a mattress, or flammable textiles could transform a street game into a family tragedy within the compound.
Faced with this public safety issue that resurfaces every December, the SAABA coordinator advocates for immediate and collective awareness. For him, prevention remains the most effective weapon. He emphasizes the importance of disseminating information to elicit a rapid response before irreparable harm is done, reminding everyone that "prevention is better than cure."
While acknowledging the police and administrative authorities' mission to protect property and people, Babacar Mbaye Ngaraff places the family at the forefront of responsibility. He urges parents to take proactive steps to guide their children, while also calling for increased vigilance from the State in the face of the growing prevalence of these dangerous practices in neighborhoods.
