Filière "cuir et peau" : Plaidoyer pour la structuration et la dynamisation du secteur
The artisans grouped within the platform of actors in the leather and hide sector Jokko Ligeey Sunu Der, believe that “the production of shoes intended for the defense and security forces could contribute to boosting this sector in Ngaye-Méckhé, a commune whose name is associated with shoemaking, in the department of Tivaouane.
The idea was put forward during a day of reflection, awareness-raising and advocacy for the structuring and revitalization of the sector, held in Ngaye-Méckhé, chosen as a pilot zone for the development of the leather and hide sector in Senegal.
The meeting, marked by an exhibition of artisan products, thematic discussions on the challenges and concrete solutions for revitalizing the leather and hides sector, recognition of deserving artisans and local actors, and the adoption of the Ngaye-Méckhé resolutions, is part of the sixth joint action plan, following several training cycles already carried out for the benefit of artisans.
According to Moustapha Sall, president of the Cooperative of professional leather artisans and associates of Ngaye-Méckhé, the objective is to exchange ideas, in depth, on the sector recognized as a promising industry.
Discussions focused primarily on the diagnosis of the sector, improving the quality of raw materials, and access to technical support and financing, particularly through public structures such as the National Office for Vocational Training (ONFP) and the General Delegation for Rapid Entrepreneurship (DER).
The prospects discussed relate to increased participation of Ngaye-Méckhé in public procurement, particularly in the production of footwear for the defense and security forces. Moustapha Sall called for unity and cohesion among artisans, indicating that good organization of the sector would be a "key lever" for its sustainable development and competitiveness.
"The meeting was a framework for strategic reflection and advocacy in favor of the sector," emphasizes Amadou Sarr, project coordinator at Maraz Academy, a school specializing in training for leather goods trades, at the heart of the fashion industry.
According to him, "the skills and know-how already exist in Ngaye-Méckhé. Now all that remains is to capitalize on these achievements and explore new opportunities, particularly in high-end leather goods."
Mouhamadou Lamine Lo Bara indicated that "training remains central. The level of technical mastery and know-how constitutes a guarantee of success and a key factor in good market positioning."
