Le Sénégal risque de perdre la BAL faute de soutien étatique
During an appearance on the Seneweb program Relax Time, sports journalist Mor Bassine strongly criticized Senegal's view of sports, which he deemed outdated and detrimental to the country's economic development. He particularly emphasized the lack of institutional support for major events such as the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
According to Mor Bassine, the main obstacle lies in the perception of sport in Senegal. It is still too often considered a simple form of entertainment or leisure, instead of being treated as a genuine economic sector capable of generating wealth.
He states: "Sport needs support to develop. Here, it's still too often considered a leisure activity, when in fact it represents a real economy." This approach prevents the country from capitalizing on the global sports industry.
To illustrate the urgency of a paradigm shift, Mor Bassine cites the direct and massive impact of the BAL on the Senegalese economy. In 2023, the event reportedly injected over 3 billion FCFA into the local economy in just ten days.
These benefits impact transportation, accommodation, catering, and the many small businesses involved in the competition.
The 2025 season was particularly successful, leading to the creation of more than 3,000 jobs in Dakar during that period.
Despite these obvious benefits, the journalist denounces the lack of institutional support and political will, which threaten the sustainability of the BAL in Senegal.
Mor Bassine reveals a telling example of state disinterest: "When the president of the BAL requests a meeting with the Minister of Sports, he isn't even received." He contrasts this indifference with the welcome extended by Rwanda, where President Paul Kagame receives the same official "several times."
The results of Rwandan policy are eloquent. The four editions of the BAL organized in Rwanda have generated more than 17 million dollars (or more than 10 billion FCFA) in the local economy.
According to Mor Bassine, this is a concrete example of what a "structured, visionary and state-supported" sports policy can produce.
In concluding his remarks, Mor Bassine issued a warning to Senegal: the country must "become more involved in all sporting disciplines." He emphasized that sport is a "fully-fledged economy" and that support mechanisms already exist. Only a strong political will is lacking to seize these major economic opportunities and guarantee the country's international standing.
