Ngoundiane - Marche de protestation : Cri de détresse de 62 agents licenciés de Talix Mines
During a peaceful protest march this Saturday, August 16, 2025, in Ngoundiane, 62 workers, including 6 staff representatives, from the Tallix Mines company, an extractive industry specializing in the open-pit mining of Diack basalt, denounced the decision of collective dismissal, since May 30, 2025, for "economic reasons" taken by their management against them.
These dismissed workers, all with permanent contracts, having totaled between 5 and 10 years of service, sometimes even more for some, believe that the procedure was not respected and that the dismissal is unfair. They are requesting, in relation to the heads of claim, "reinstatement or payment of 10,000,000 FCFA for the longest-serving workers and 7,000,000 FCFA for the others as damages for unfair termination of employment contract"; "back pay for salary arrears"; "severance pay"; "notice pay"; "back pay for leave compensation"; "damages for failure to report to the Social Security Institutions".
Assane Diaw, permanent staff representative and general secretary of the CNTS union at Talix Mines, speaks of "generalized injustice" regarding the "economic reasons" put forward as the motive by the employer. He says he does not understand "such injustice, especially since we noted that two months later, after this mass dismissal, the company restarted blasting operations, with two operations on August 1 and 8." Not to mention the fact that the company recalled some of the dismissed employees to offer them fixed-term contracts (CDD) when we all had permanent contracts (CDI)."
In order to reach an agreement between the parties, a tentative conciliation session was held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, with the Regional Inspector of Labor and Social Security, Daniel Faye. Despite the efforts made, the two parties were unable to find common ground for the continuation of their employment relationship. The profound differences between the positions of the two parties and the lack of common ground led to the failure of the conciliation.
These workers are now continuing their proceedings at the Thiès High Court, holding a letter of non-conciliation. They are calling on President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye and his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, to ensure justice is done. They are also calling on the local authorities concerned, including the mayor of Ngoundiane.
"Since then, we have seen that Mayor Mbaye Dione has remained speechless about this affair, even though he had no reason to adopt such a stance. We are personally appealing to him to let him know that, apart from the people of Diack and Ngoundiane, he must take radical action on the matter."
