Thiès : les conducteurs de motos-jakarta contre les contrôles policiers
On Monday, March 9th, hundreds of motorcycle taxi drivers in Thiès mobilized to denounce what they consider police harassment. Riding their vehicles, they traveled through the city to various police stations to express their anger. The protesters are demonstrating, in particular, against arrests related to not wearing helmets.
A reminder of the health and safety rules
At the Nguinth police station, the commander met with the drivers to discuss the matter. He emphasized that his officers had never issued a ticket for not having a second helmet for the passenger. "We don't require Jakarta drivers to have two helmets because it's a public health issue. We shouldn't make multiple people wear one helmet," he explained to the protesters, thus clearing up a major misunderstanding about the reasons for the checks.
A warning against the anarchic occupation of public space
The police chief also insisted that this form of protest was inappropriate. "What you need to understand is that your method of protesting does not respect the rules. If you want the police to listen to you, you need to organize yourselves by designating a few people to come and meet with us and discuss your concerns," he explained to the crowd.
The commander recalled his past interventions at bus stops in Jakarta, where he had previously gone to explain the conditions for peaceful operation. He concluded with a firm injunction: “You must stop this demonstration and clear the public highway. Never do this again. If you have any problems, send some of your members to come and meet with us. We will not tolerate this chaos.” Finally, he urged drivers to improve their organization and strictly adhere to the Highway Code.
