CAN 2025 Qualifiers: Laborious victory for the Lions against Burundi

After the frustrating draw against Burkina Faso, Senegal was highly anticipated for their away match against Burundi in Malawi. Heavily criticized for his tactical choices, Aliou Cissé made some changes in his starting lineup, notably with the starting positions of Formose Mendy at right-back and Moussa Niakhaté in central defense. In addition to these player changes, Aliou Cissé also modified his playing system, abandoning his 3-5-2 formation to return to a 4-3-3.

Despite these tactical adjustments, Senegal struggled to impose their rhythm. After a very difficult first half, where Sadio Mané and his teammates struggled to be dangerous, the Lions found a slight improvement with the introduction of Iliman Ndiaye, who brought more liveliness to the offensive actions. By dint of insisting, Senegal finally found the breakthrough thanks to a penalty obtained by Sadio Mané in the 71st minute. Ismaila Sarr, in charge of taking the penalty, did not tremble and scored calmly.

In the end, Senegal won with difficulty but ensured the essential by winning (0-1) before the 3rd and 4th matchdays scheduled for next month.
