One of course, is democratic ideals. Senegal has had free and fair elections since its independence from France. The second one is good governance. Both governing party and opposition have been afforded equality too participate in elections. The third one is religious tolerance; the fourth one of course is gender equality. Women in Senegal are allowed to compete equally with men,” he said.
DAKAR, 31 May 2006 (IRIN/PLUSNEWS)- As the Senegalese authorities crack down against illegal migrants, destination country Spain has launched a high-profile diplomatic offensive to bolster cooperation with West African leaders.“The only future for illegal migration is return - the alternative is death by drowning,” Spain’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Bernardino Leon said on Wednesday. “Our two governments share the same humanitarian concerns.”Speaking to reporters after meeting Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade, the minister said Spain had agreed to help Senegal to try to keep its people at home by funding a scheme to encourage 10,000 young people to return to the countryside to take up farming.
DAKAR, 31 May 2006 (IRIN) - As more and more young men from Senegal climb into fishing boats in the hopes of making it to Europe, efforts are growing to keep the legions of would-be migrants safe at home on dry land. “We can’t just stand here and let these people leave to drown in the Atlantic,” said Amadou Mountaga Sarr.“We must warn them about the danger and tell them what’s really out there,” added Sarr, news editor of a community radio station called Oxyjeunes that operates from a shantytown outside Dakar.
