En Février, 2014 (06:57 AM)She has to keep the grant money rolling. Senegal is so beautiful. Imagine being transferred from the extreme winters of North America to the really temperate weather of Dakar. Dakar and its beautiful beaches, and its excellent fish and seafood. Who would trade it for the Dakotas in the winters.
It is also very cheap to afford servants in Dakar, a luxury 95 per cent of westerners could not afford in their own countries. But in Senegal, you can get a driver, a gardener, cooks and even chef. Who would trade that for a very average life in the suburbs of a north American. There the houses are beautiful and the lawns are manicured but the souls of people and their energy have been sucked by the forces of the market. Every household has to keep paying mortgages and taxes on houses they own. The price of modernity is very high on the psyche of these societies.
To keep the money rolling from the big donors at the Rockefeller, Ford or Mellon Foundations, you have to find to find new themes and keep the show alive.
One the most powerful tool in their arsenal is the power to name and show in a negative light the object of their propaganda. The talib who was the most revered person become a street child. The quranic master who is deemed the most esteemed professional by the prophet is portrayed as a pedophile and torturer. Excision is renamed Female Genital Mutilation. They even ask us to pass a law of Parity, a law that is economically counterproductive. What we needed was to have the best qualified person fill the job but for Molly and her likes what matters is action or distraction but not the efficiency of our economy.
One other tool of the propagandist are images that shock. Who wouldn t be shaken by the dirty bleeding head of a child. But those images are deceptive. No statistics of child abuses are given. I would doubt if those were numbers were in Senegal that in other. the Senegal of the Teranga cannot deny teranga to its own children.
The exploitation of images of hungry Africans is their domain of predilection. Having been raised on the texts of The Dark Continent, they have to publish images that confirm their bias. Cannibals in RCA, bodies of west Africans at the gate of Europe, street children in Senegal are images that confirm their low expectations for Africa.
While the fastest growing economies are in Africa, while the mining and petroleum sectors are exploding, Mary and her cohorts want to keep feeding the world the most negative images of Africans.
It is time we regulate what images of Africa can be projected to the world. A New world order of information is still needed where the South will tell its story. But this time, we should not wait for UNESCO to ask for that change. We have to invest in information technologies and control the story of Africans.
