Un jeune député meurt dans l’enceinte du Parlement

Eemeli Peltonen, 30, was found dead late this morning. The cause of death is not yet known.

In Finland, a Social Democratic Party MP, Eemeli Peltonen, 30, died Tuesday in the parliament building, the institution's administration announced.

"The person who died in the Parliament building on the morning of August 19 was Eemeli Peltonen, a first-term MP," the Parliament's press office said in a statement, which did not specify the cause of his death.

According to police, Eemeli Peltonen died around 11 a.m.

She said she was "investigating the cause of death, but (she) did not suspect foul play at this stage."

"The death of Eemeli Peltonen deeply upsets me and all of us," said the chairwoman of the Social Democratic parliamentary group, Tytti Tuppurainen, in a statement.

Flag at half-mast

"He was a much-loved member of our community and will be deeply missed," she added.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb and many MPs deplored the news.

"Today we received tragic news from Parliament," Mr Stubb wrote on X.

The Finnish flag flew at half-mast on Tuesday in front of the parliament building in central Helsinki as a sign of mourning.

Originally from Järvenpää (south), Eemeli Peltonen had indicated at the end of June that he was on sick leave following a nosocomial infection contracted in the spring during treatment for a kidney disease.

Finnish MPs are currently on summer recess, with the autumn session starting on 2 September.
