Bus tombé dans le fleuve Ouémé au Bénin : Une possible somnolence du chauffeur évoquée par les enquêteurs
On the night of August 16-17, 2025, a serious road accident occurred at the Ouémé River crossing bridge, located in the town of Thio (central Benin). A public transport bus coming from Lomé hit the bridge railing and ended up in the river with its passengers. The human toll was heavy: 43 dead and only 9 survivors.
Speeding
According to BIP radio, Glazoué police, who are investigating the circumstances of the tragedy, have already interviewed the survivors and the bus owner. The initial findings of the investigation point to misconduct.
The probable causes mentioned are excessive speed and possible drowsiness of the driver.
The latter apparently lost control of the bus before reaching the crossing bridge. At least, this is what investigators suggest, since they noted traces of impact on the guardrail several meters before entering the bridge.
