A major innovation is coming to Chad's education system. Starting next academic year, Arabic language instruction will become mandatory in the country's schools.
In an official circular, the Minister of National Education, Dr. Mahamat-Ahmad Alhabo, announced a policy of "mandatory full bilingualism."
"The teaching of the Arabic language must no longer be considered an optional subject. It must be taught in all educational institutions with the same number of hours and the same weighting as the French language, in accordance with the principles of equality and linguistic equity," the document states.
The General Directorate of Teaching, Learning, and Civic Promotion is tasked with ensuring the strict application of this measure. It will take, in coordination with decentralized structures, all necessary steps for its effective implementation.
