Guinée : Décès en détention du colonel Claude Pivi
The Prosecutor General's Office at the Court of Appeal of Conakry announced on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the death of Colonel Claude Pivi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity related to the events of September 28, 2009.
According to the statement, the former officer suffered from chronic conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure and gout, for which he received regular medical monitoring in detention.
The Attorney General's office, however, mentions a failure to comply with the treatment, which led, on January 4, 2026, to severe hypoglycemia requiring his emergency evacuation to the Almamy Samory Touré Military Hospital.
After two days in intensive care, Colonel Claude Pivi died on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in a "hypoglycemic coma," according to his attending physician.
The deceased, found guilty of command responsibility in the violence of September 28, 2009 at the stadium of the same name in Conakry, had been sentenced to life imprisonment with a security period of twenty-five (25) years.
After escaping from prison, he was arrested and then re-incarcerated on September 19, 2024 at the central prison in Coyah to serve his sentence.
