Journée mondiale de la santé bucco-dentaire : Plus de 65 % des Sénégalais concernés, l’État renforce la riposte

On the occasion of World Oral Health Day, celebrated every March 20 under the auspices of the International Dental Federation, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene is raising the alarm about the extent of oral diseases in Senegal.

According to health authorities, more than 65% of the population is affected. This worrying figure places these conditions among the major public health challenges.

An underestimated public health issue

Tooth decay, gum disease, and noma: these often-neglected conditions can have serious consequences. Chronic pain, nutritional disorders, learning difficulties in children… These are just some of the impacts that extend far beyond the oral cavity.

Worse still, these diseases are frequently associated with serious conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. The theme of the 2026 edition, "A happy mouth, a happy life," thus highlights the close link between oral health and overall well-being.

The state is undertaking structural reforms.

In response to this situation, the Senegalese authorities have announced an intensification of efforts. Several reforms have already been undertaken, including strengthening infrastructure and equipment, training healthcare personnel, and integrating oral healthcare into primary healthcare services.

Specific initiatives have also been put in place to improve early disease detection, with the involvement of community health workers and traditional medicine practitioners.

Furthermore, the fight against noma, a serious disease that primarily affects children, is now a national priority. Significant progress has been made in surveillance and early intervention.

A strengthened legal and environmental framework

Senegal has also strengthened its legal framework with the adoption, in 2023, of a law regulating the practice of dental surgery and the National Order of Dental Surgeons.

In a dynamic of modernization, the country is also part of a transition towards safer and more sustainable care, in particular through the progressive elimination of dental amalgams containing mercury, in accordance with the Minamata Convention.

Persistent challenges

Despite these advances, several obstacles remain. The shortage of qualified personnel, still limited access to healthcare in some areas, and low levels of preventative care remain major concerns. Added to this are dietary habits characterized by high sugar consumption and inadequate hygiene practices.

A national campaign after Korité

To reverse this trend, a large-scale national communication campaign will be launched after the Korité festival. It will include awareness-raising activities, screening, and free treatment in schools, Daaras, and public spaces across the country.

The ministry is therefore calling for a collective mobilization of citizens, health professionals and decision-makers in order to promote better hygiene practices and to sustainably reduce the burden of oral diseases.

The four golden rules to remember

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Reduce sugar consumption
  3. Consult a dental health professional regularly
  4. Avoid tobacco and adopt a healthy lifestyle

The message is clear: health also begins with the mouth.
