Santé : IFC injecte 12 milliards FCFA dans Carrefour Médical pour booster la production locale d’équipements et consommables médicaux
A major boost for Senegal's healthcare sovereignty. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has just announced a strategic partnership with the national leader Carrefour Médical (COSEMAD Group): €18 million in financing, or approximately 12 billion CFA francs – largely in CFA francs – to strengthen the local production and distribution of healthcare products. The objective: to make Senegal a regional hub for the manufacture of medical equipment and consumables, particularly dialysis kits, the demand for which is skyrocketing with the rise in chronic kidney disease. What the financing will concretely enable
“This is not just a loan; it’s international recognition of our vision and our strength,” said Saliou Mboup, founder and CEO of the COSEMAD Group. “Thanks to IFC’s expertise, we will be able to meet the needs of Senegal and the entire sub-region with dialysis care at controlled costs.”
Olivier Buyoya, IFC Regional Director for West Africa, made no secret of his satisfaction: “This partnership with a local champion is fully aligned with Senegal’s Vision 2050 and the government’s ‘Sunu Champion’ initiative. It will reduce dependence on imports, lower the price of vital treatments, and create quality jobs.” This is not IFC’s first foray into Senegalese healthcare: the institution has already supported the Pasteur Institute in Dakar for its vaccine factory, Duopharm for its new pharmaceutical unit, and the startup Kera Health. With Carrefour Médical, it is making an even bigger impact on the local manufacturing of equipment and supplies. A pioneer in dialysis in Senegal since 2011, as well as in PSA medical oxygen and the modernization of hospital imaging, Carrefour Médical is now moving into industrial scale.
The message is clear: Senegal no longer wants to just import its syringes and dialysis generators, it wants to produce them itself, export them, and treat its neighbors at a lower cost.
A new and decisive milestone towards universal health coverage and West African pharmaceutical independence.
