Crise scolaire au Sénégal : le G7 hausse le ton et annonce une plainte contre l’État
Meeting in Dakar on Thursday, April 2, 2026, the most representative unions in the education sector, grouped within the G7, expressed their deep concern about the evolving school crisis that has been shaking Senegal since the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year. In a firm statement, they denounced what they considered incoherent management and called for urgent measures to break the deadlock.
A paradoxical way out of the crisis
Following their meeting, the G7 members strongly criticized the conclusions of the meeting held on March 23 with the Ministry of Public Service. According to them, this meeting, intended to pave the way for a resolution to the crisis, paradoxically led to the fulfillment of some demands that had already been met, while leaving aside essential points that remain unresolved.
The unions are particularly critical of what they describe as the "contemptuous" attitude of certain authorities, especially that of the Minister of Public Service, Olivier Boucal. They accuse him of making condescending remarks towards teachers and of trying to discredit their commitment.
Outrage at government measures
The G7 also condemns the continued practice of wage "salad-style" reductions, with deductions deemed excessive. Unions consider this practice a serious violation of workers' rights and a factor contributing to the radicalization of the movement.
In response to this situation, the union collective has announced its decision to file a lawsuit against the State of Senegal. The aim is to obtain an immediate halt to these measures and compensation for the harm suffered by the teachers.
A call for solidarity and mobilization
In their statement, the unions expressed their solidarity with other sectors engaged in struggle, particularly healthcare and transportation, which they consider pillars of national development. They called for a convergence of struggles to increase pressure on the authorities to obtain a comprehensive settlement of outstanding social issues.
Furthermore, the G7 welcomes the efforts of religious and traditional authorities as well as the mediation initiatives undertaken to ease tensions.
An ultimatum addressed to the government
The unions indicate they have examined a draft amended memorandum of understanding, but believe the responsibility for resolving the crisis now rests entirely with the government. In the absence of concrete measures, they warn they will continue their fight with determination as soon as classes resume.
A decisive step has been announced.
In this context, the G7 announces its active participation in the march planned for April 8, 2026. A mobilization that it wants to be decisive in demanding the complete settlement of social liabilities and a lasting improvement in the conditions of teachers.
A call for a more effective school system
In conclusion, the unions urge all teachers to remain mobilized and call for increased vigilance. They reaffirm their commitment to a strong and effective Senegalese school system, founded on justice and social equity.
