Retards de paiement et inégalités salariales : Après les étudiants, les enseignants haussent le ton
While Senegalese public universities are shaken by tensions marked by clashes between students and law enforcement to demand the payment of scholarships, teachers are also joining the protest.
Faced with payment delays and wage inequalities, they announce a tougher tone and multiply their calls for urgent measures.
In a press release, the National Directorate of the Unified Union Framework of Secondary School Teachers (CUSEMS) is raising its voice. Meeting in its third ordinary session, the union conducted a thorough examination of the socio-professional situation of secondary school teachers and denounces serious dysfunctions.
Indeed, CUSEMS expresses its "deep concern" regarding the persistent delays in the payment of allowances related to school exams. It calls upon the government and demands a "full, prompt, and definitive" settlement of these rights, which teachers consider to be legitimately acquired.
The union also reaffirmed its demand for the correction of the compensation system, which it described as "inconsistent" and "unfair." It called for urgent structural reform to restore pay equity and enhance the teaching profession.
CUSEMS also reminds the State of Senegal of its commitments regarding the salary "rebasing" announced several months ago and demands its effective implementation as soon as possible.
Among its other demands are the expansion of the scope of application of two decrees currently undergoing administrative processing, the reform of the pension scheme for decision-makers, the acceleration of the dematerialization of administrative procedures, and the correction of "over-taxations" and omissions found in the processing of salaries.
The union also calls for an urgent reorganization of the BFEM (Brevet de fin d'études moyennes) in order to improve transparency and efficiency in the organization of examinations as well as the start of universal diploma training.
Firm in its tone, CUSEMS warns that it does not rule out resorting to union action. "Patience is not resignation," the union members warn, asserting that their determination "is commensurate with the injustice."
The National Directorate finally calls on teachers to remain "mobilized, in solidarity and united".
