Violences entre étudiants de la FST : La main lourde du conseil de discipline
A few days ago, the newspaper L'Observateur reported acts of violence at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), resulting in serious injuries requiring hospitalization. These clashes occurred between students from two rival student groups (Blue and Azure) within the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). Seneweb has learned that the disciplinary board, chaired by the rector, investigated the incident. And to say the least, the board took a particularly harsh stance. Three students were permanently expelled from UCAD. They will never be able to enroll in any institution within the university.
These students, all from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), are Khadim Diouf, a Master's student in Life and Earth Sciences (SVT), Ousmane Gueye, a Master's student in Physics and Chemistry (PC), and Jean-Pierre Babacar Thiao, a student in the Professional Bachelor's program in Animal Production. Thiao is the coordinator of the Blue List, while Khadim Diouf heads the Azure List. Others involved received sanctions ranging from one to five years of bans from enrolling at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD). This heavy-handed approach by the disciplinary board reflects a commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding violence on campus.
It all started on the night of May 2nd to 3rd, 2023. After finishing their general assembly at 11 PM at the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies (FST), students from the Blue List, led by Pierre Babacar Thiao, headed towards the student residence building, making a lot of noise with sound systems and firecrackers. Security guards from the University Center for Student Services (COUD) tried to dissuade them, but without success. Students from the Azure List then positioned themselves nearby, also with their own sound system. This rivalry generated tension, with insults being exchanged and clashes breaking out around 2 AM between buildings F and G.
Following these violent clashes, students and COUD security personnel sustained injuries, some serious, others minor. For example, student Cheikh Ndiaye was rushed to the Principal Hospital with a head injury. A security guard, struck by a thrown brick, suffered a fractured left rib. Weapons used included machetes, iron bars, chains, broken bottles, and other items.
