In his book "Africa at Heart," former Senegalese President Macky Sall offers "a story told in two voices." The Child of Fatick and the Quest for Light
The former head of state returned to "his modest origins, marked by life in rural Senegal where access to water and electricity was a luxury." For example, Macky Sall confides that "he found one of the meanings of his commitment in the joy of a child, amazed at seeing the light burst from a light bulb in a newly electrified village." This episode, which he presents as "an intimate driving force," fuels "his fight for social equity and universal access to basic services." Trained as a geologist, he emphasizes this "professional deformation" which led him to approach "politics as a technical project, where everything must be planned, measured, and rationalized." "This engineer's prism is reflected in the design of the Emerging Senegal Plan (PSE), which he describes as the methodical translation of his vision for the country."
But the narrative quickly shifts to the international stage. Macky Sall recounts his one-on-one meetings with Barack Obama, Emmanuel Macron, and Vladimir Putin, moments when Senegal found itself at the heart of global strategic decisions. He advocates principled diplomacy: "openness to dialogue, rejection of bloc logic, and defense of African interests above all."
Africa as a horizon
Throughout the pages, Macky Sall places his career within a collective history, that of an Africa seeking to assert its place in a polarized world. His term as president of the African Union is presented as the apogee of this continental commitment, notably when he advocated for equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines and for the reform of global governance.
Between personal confidences and diplomatic backstage, the former president constructs a narrative that oscillates between intimate memory and political justification. He doesn't just tell his story: he seeks to place Africa in a new imaginary world, where the local and the global, lived experience and geopolitics, no longer oppose each other, but complement each other.

Le dictateur déchu est totalement déconnecté sinon il n'aurait pas fait éditer son livre à l'étranger et ne l'aurait pas présenté à New-York. C'est pourquoi il sera surpris de se retrouver à Rebeuss pour le restant de sa vie
Macky, c'est du sérieux, l'expérience, du haut niveau. Qu'on l'aime ou pas. Faut reconaitre sa dimension internationale.
Un livre ne peut pas effacer tout ce sang versé et toutes ses victimes de balles réelles et assassinats crapuleux du sale maquis. MS peut écrire autant de livres qu'il veut, faire la campagne internationale partout et chercher tous les soutiens de la terre, cela ne changera rien, le peuple sénégalais l'a tourné le dos et réglera ses comptes par A ou B.
