Energie, Commerce, Agriculture…: Sonko veut compresser l’enveloppe des subventions qui culmine à 833,5 milliards de FCFA
The State of Senegal is currently facing serious budgetary difficulties. This Monday, the Prime Minister and members of the Government addressed the issue of subsidies distributed to various sectors and tax exemptions.
He reported that, on average, over the last six years, the Trade sector received 59 billion FCFA in subsidies, Energy 470 billion FCFA, Agriculture 86 billion FCFA, Higher Education 131 billion FCFA and National Education 12 billion FCFA.
"This amounts to 833.5 billion FCFA. That's the average annual amount of subsidies we grant. And upon analysis, I'm convinced that a good portion, perhaps half, is being captured by users who were not the target of these subsidies. Should we maintain these subsidies? If so, at what proportion?" he asked his ministers.
With them, Ousmane Sonko explored avenues for tax relief and, according to RTS, discussed the quality of budgetary spending and tax exemptions. He established a framework to address the issue.
"I decided to set up this committee so that we could work on it. And I would like this work to be done in ten days. I want us to be able to come out of this exercise with a reformed subsidy policy that responds to our realities, to our actual capabilities," he said.
As a reminder, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has long been urging the Senegalese government, particularly under Macky Sall's administration, to reduce or eliminate subsidies, especially in the energy sector, given their significant impact. However, such a reduction risks leading to a general increase in prices.
