Ouakam : La Banque mondiale supervise le chantier du quai de pêche de 435 millions
The Ouakam fishing pier modernization project is entering a crucial phase. On Thursday, April 3, 2026, a high-level delegation from the World Bank visited the site to assess the progress of the work. This visit is part of a mission to support the implementation of the Natural Resources Management Project in Senegal (SENRM).
The delegation was led by Dr. Arame Tall, project manager at the World Bank, accompanied by Dr. Papa Namsa Keita, coordinator of the fisheries component of SENRM.
With a total budget of 435 million FCFA, the Ouakam fishing pier project aims to radically transform working conditions for those involved in the maritime industry. Officially launched by work order on August 1, 2025, the project is expected to last 16 months, with completion scheduled for December 2026.
On the ground, significant progress has been made. To date, four rest shelters are already 90% complete. Meanwhile, the landing platform is under construction and the clearing of the local market area has begun.
State-of-the-art equipment for the value chain
To meet international standards and boost export capacity, the project includes state-of-the-art technical infrastructure, the construction of which constitutes the next major phase of the project. The site will notably feature a 30 m³ cold storage facility, an ice factory with a capacity of 5 tons per day, and a water pretreatment center.
The quay's energy independence will be ensured by the installation of a generator and a small well. The remaining work also includes roofing, the installation of modern handling equipment, and the construction of a market specifically dedicated to exports. These improvements aim to ensure better management of fisheries resources while increasing the added value of local production.
