At a press conference marking two years of Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye's administration, Nicolas Ndiaye, Secretary General of the Democratic League, strongly criticized the Senegalese authorities' stance on Macky Sall's candidacy for international positions, particularly for Secretary-General of the United Nations. According to the political leader, Senegal's refusal to support this candidacy constitutes a major strategic error, especially given Africa's need to strengthen its representation in international bodies. "Who better than an African to represent Africa on the world stage?" he asked.

Nicolas Ndiaye denounces what he considers a contradictory stance on the part of the current authorities. According to him, no legal proceedings have yet established Macky Sall's responsibility in the accusations raised in the public debate. "Two years after they came to power, there is neither a completed investigation nor a judgment. On what basis, then, is his candidacy being refused support?" He also points out that the current regime maintained relations with the former president after the transition, mentioning official exchanges, which, in his view, makes the reversal all the more incomprehensible.

A continental issue, beyond political divisions

For Nicolas Ndiaye, the issue transcends internal political rivalries. He insists that the position of UN Secretary-General represents, above all, a continent. In a context marked by Africa's structural challenges—poverty, conflict, climate change—he believes that unity around an African candidate should prevail.

He cites international precedents to illustrate that candidacies can be supported despite controversies, in the absence of a judicial conviction. Beyond the case of Macky Sall, Nicolas Ndiaye frames this decision within a broader critique of current Senegalese diplomacy, which he considers to be in decline. He mentions "a loss of Senegal's influence, a decrease in visits by heads of state, and a lack of clarity in international positions." According to him, foreign policy must be guided by clear-sightedness and strategic interests, not by emotional or partisan considerations.
