Violences à l’UCAD : la Coalition Sopi Sénégal dénonce une « répression meurtrière » et réclame des sanctions
The Sopi Senegal Coalition has strongly condemned the violence that occurred at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), which led to the tragic death of a student. In a statement released on February 15, 2026, in Dakar, the coalition denounced the brutal repression against students and demanded a full investigation into the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
The press release from the communications unit states that despite repeated warnings from informed and responsible voices, the worst has happened. Instead of listening and consulting, the authorities reportedly responded with contempt, threats, and unfounded accusations of manipulation. Sopi Sénégal condemns in the strongest possible terms the violence perpetrated against the students of UCAD, a repression that ultimately cost the life of Abdoulaye Ba, a second-year medical student, cut down in the prime of his life.
The coalition expressed its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, his loved ones, and the entire university community. The organization believes the country cannot be satisfied with mere expressions of regret. It calls for an immediate investigation to formally identify those responsible and demands exemplary sanctions at all levels of the chain of command. Furthermore, it considers the situation on several campuses across the country to have become untenable and warns of the risk of escalation if urgent measures are not taken.
To bring lasting peace to the social climate, the coalition urges the authorities to take immediate measures, such as releasing the arrested students, lifting the suspension of student associations, and resuming open dialogue with union representatives. It also calls for free medical treatment for the injured in hospitals. Finally, Sopi Sénégal criticizes the closure of university restaurants, seeing it as a violation of the right to food for thousands of students, and calls on all stakeholders to remain calm while reminding the authorities of their duty to guarantee the freedoms and stability of the country.
