Afrique du Sud: tirs dans un foyer de travailleurs, 11 morts (police)
Armed men stormed a workers' hostel in Pretoria, the South African capital, on Saturday, killing 11 people including a three-year-old child, police said.
This attack is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have shocked the country of 63 million people, weary of endemic crime.
"I can confirm that a total of 25 people were shot," said police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe, adding that 14 of them had been hospitalized.
Ten people died at the scene in the township of Saulsville, located 18 km west of Pretoria, and an eleventh died in hospital, according to the same source.
Three armed men entered the establishment at around 04:30 (02:30 GMT) and fired indiscriminately at a group of men who were drinking.
Two teenagers, aged 12 and 16, were among the dead.
This is a "very regrettable incident. The police were only alerted around 6:00 AM," commented Ms. Mathe.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown and no arrests have been made.
South Africa, the most industrialized country on the continent, is grappling with endemic crime and corruption, fueled by organized networks.
While many people legally own firearms for personal protection, the number of illegal weapons in circulation is much higher.
Between April and September, approximately 63 people were killed each day in South Africa, according to police data.
