Attaque contre l’aéroport de Niamey : Le Bénin réagit aux accusations du général Tiani

It's an open secret. Niamey airport and Niger's Air Force Base 101 were attacked on the night of January 28-29, 2026. During a visit to the base last Thursday, the Nigerien president accused the French, Beninese, and Ivorian presidents of sponsoring the attackers.

"We remind the sponsors of these mercenaries, including Emmanuel Macron, Patrice Talon, and Alassane Ouattara, that we have listened to them barking enough. Let them prepare in turn to listen to us roar," the Nigerien president declared.

In Benin, government spokesman Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji dismissed General Tiani's accusations against his boss.

"Following Mr. Tiani's statements, his fellow citizens on social media say they don't believe him."

He believes that Nigeriens don't even believe their president's statements. "Following Mr. Tiani's declarations, his fellow citizens on social media are saying they don't believe him. I've read many reactions. Nigeriens are saying: 'No, that's enough, leave little Benin alone. We know they are our brothers, they are our friends,'" Mr. Houngbédji declared, deliberately recalling the events of December 7, 2025.

“We know what we experienced on December 7th, and we know the divisions in some countries of the sub-region. However, we didn’t go around shouting ourselves hoarse. Perhaps there are people who are starting a diversion because they think that at some point they will be talked about. A way of taking precautions,” the former journalist said.

"We will not take any threat lightly."

Regarding the thinly veiled threats from General Tiani, he reassured the public that his country is not taking them lightly. "If there are threats, what we have been doing to guarantee the safety of our citizens, overall security in our country, and the integrity of our territory, these efforts will be amplified. We will not take any threat lightly, but we will not waste time on issues or with people whose aim is to prevent us from remaining number one," he declared.
