Au lendemain du coup d'État, Madagascar sous régime militaire
Madagascar was preparing for a new era of military rule on Wednesday, the day after an elite army unit seized power following the ouster of President Andry Rajoelina, promising elections within two years.
The Capsat military contingent seized power Tuesday moments after parliamentarians overwhelmingly voted to remove Andry Rajoelina, who appears to have fled the island nation as soldiers joined anti-government protesters last weekend after weeks of street demonstrations.
The capital Antananarivo was calm on Wednesday morning, but there was some uncertainty about what would happen next, amid concerns expressed by international bodies.
Capsat commander Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the new de facto president of one of the world's poorest and most corrupt countries, told reporters Tuesday that the political transition would take less than two years and would include the restructuring of key institutions. It would be overseen by a committee of officers from the army, gendarmerie, and police.
Colonel Randrianirina promised elections in 18 to 24 months and assured that the committee would seek a "consensus prime minister" to form a new government.
The authority of the new government was legitimized by the Constitutional Court after the validation of the impeachment vote against Andry Rajoelina.

A long-time vocal critic of Mr. Rajoelina's rule, Colonel Randrianirina was imprisoned for several months from November 2023 for inciting mutiny with a view to a coup d'état, according to press reports.
The presidency denounced "a clear act of attempted coup d'état" and stressed that Andry Rajoelina, whose whereabouts are unknown and who was last seen in public a week ago, "remains fully in office."
The United Nations said Tuesday it was waiting for "the dust to settle," while expressing concern about any unconstitutional change of power.
The security body of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a regional organization of which Andry Rajoelina held the rotating presidency, said it was "particularly alarmed by reports of an attempted coup."
"The military leaders who have taken power should respect and protect the rights of all Malagasy people," Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.
The youth-led Gen Z movement, which initiated the protests against water and energy shortages starting on September 25, welcomed Colonel Randrianirina's intervention.
The protest movement, which initially denounced the incessant water and electricity cuts, then evolved into a broader protest against President Rajoelina and his clan.
Andry Rajoelina, re-elected in a contested election in 2023, came to power in 2009 in a military-backed coup that was denounced by the international community, which froze foreign aid and investment for nearly four years.
He has resisted growing calls for his resignation, saying in an address to the nation from an undisclosed location on Monday that he was seeking solutions to Madagascar's problems.
While reports indicated he was helped to leave with the assistance of France, the former colonial power, he said he was in a "safe place to protect (his) life."
Madagascar, an island with a very poor population, has a long history of popular uprisings followed by the establishment of transitional military governments.
At least 80% of Madagascar's 32 million inhabitants live on less than 15,000 ariary per day (2.80 euros), the poverty line set by the World Bank.

C'est le sommet de la bétise !!!! Soutenir des militaires tortionaires ! Du masochisme.
Just like Mali, Niger. Burkina some nations are born stupid and ignorant
