Bénin : La Commission électorale provisoirement supprimée
In Benin, the National Assembly adopted a law yesterday, Friday, July 10, that repeals the provisions establishing the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA). The electoral institution has therefore been temporarily suspended pending its complete restructuring and reconfiguration.
A decree issued by the Council of Ministers will define the procedures for preserving its assets and settling its outstanding debts. The staff will be reassigned to the public administration.
It must be said that this temporary suspension of the electoral institution is very timely, since recent constitutional reforms have extended the terms of municipal councilors, members of parliament, and the president of the Republic to seven years. Given that the term of office for members of the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA) is five years, and that the current term expires on July 14, 2026, it is clear that appointing a new team would be pointless, as it will not be organizing any elections before 2031.
