In Benin, Romuald Wadagni presided over his first Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, May 28, 2026. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly.
The head of state congratulated his new collaborators, but not without specifying that the choice made in them should not be perceived as "a personal privilege much less the reward for any political commitment".
In short, they are there to resolutely serve the Republic. "Concern for the general interest must guide the Government in all decisions to be made," he told them.
The president also reiterated the major priorities of his seven-year term: the eradication of extreme poverty and a significant reduction in poverty. His strategy for achieving this is clear: regionalizing development.
As another priority, Mr. Wadagni mentioned the defense and security of the national territory. He instructed the government to work resolutely on this.
Regarding the organization of work, the President of the Republic has announced that there will no longer be a Council of Ministers meeting every week.
The Council will now meet in ordinary session, on a monthly basis, i.e. every first Wednesday of the month, which does not exclude extraordinary sessions if necessary.
Following this approach, the Interministerial Committee will meet twice a month, on the first and third Mondays of each month. Cabinet meetings with sectoral ministers will also be held on specific topics as needed.
