Thomas Boni Yayi, a founding member of the opposition party Les Démocrates, announced his resignation from the political party yesterday, Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The former president justified his departure by citing health problems and his desire to retire from politics.

“After much deliberation over the past few months, I am informing you of my decision to step down from my position as president of the Les Démocrates party for health reasons and to be able to fully dedicate this new stage of my life to rest,” Boni Yayi wrote in a letter sent to the top leaders of the political party.

The statesman is thus ending his "political activities within the party." In a spirit of continuity and responsibility, he has entrusted "the leadership of the political organization" to the vice-presidents and governing bodies until the next congress.

Note that his son Chabi Yayi also resigned from the opposition political party.
