Burundi : Décès d’un joueur en plein match lié à une pratique de « sorcellerie »
Burundian football is in mourning. Igiraneza Aimé Guéric, midfielder for second-division club Les Guêpiers du Lac, died suddenly during a match against LLB Amasipiri Never Give Up. The player collapsed on the pitch and did not survive, despite the intervention of medical teams and his transfer to the hospital.
According to several eyewitness accounts, the cause of death appears to be the accidental ingestion of a coin the player had in his mouth during the match. African public radio reports that this coin may have been used as a talisman, a practice employed in certain witchcraft rituals still prevalent in Burundian football.
Although Igiraneza Aimé Guéric denied resorting to such practices in a previous interview, habits linked to marabouts and mystical objects persist in some clubs.
The Burundian Football Federation issued a statement offering its condolences to the player's family and club, without specifying the exact circumstances of the tragedy. The public and those involved in football are demanding answers regarding this case.
