Five Mauritanians are missing following a spectacular collision between two fishing boats off the coast of Mauritania on Friday, while around twenty people were rescued, including three Spaniards, the Spanish maritime rescue service announced on Saturday.

"The Mauritanian authorities informed us today (Saturday) that yesterday (Friday) there was a collision between two vessels," the "Right Whale" and the "Tafra 3," a spokesperson for the Spanish maritime rescue service told AFP.

Mauritanian authorities "indicated that the second ship sank, that its crew numbered 26 people, and that 21 had been rescued," according to the same source.

"There are five missing Mauritanian nationals; three Spanish citizens have been rescued," the spokesperson added.

In a statement, the regional government of Galicia (northwestern Spain) confirmed that the "Tafra 3" had sunk off the coast of Mauritania.

"Currently, five people of Mauritanian nationality are missing; the rest of the crew, including three Spaniards (two captains and a machinist), have been able to reach dry land," said the statement from the regional government of Galicia, which said it "hopes" that the five missing people will be found.
