Commerce : Le Maroc va interdire ce produit d’exportation après la CAN
Following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco will ban the export of frozen sardines. This decision will take effect on February 1, 2026, and is obviously unrelated to the major African football tournament.
According to the Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries, Ms. Zakia Driouich, the Kingdom of Morocco simply wants to preserve fish stocks and guarantee greater availability of this fish on the domestic market.
Sardine landings have fallen by 46% in two years
Pelagic species, such as sardines, represent approximately 80% of Morocco's coastal fisheries resources. Unfortunately, a decline in catches has been observed in recent months. According to data from the National Fisheries Office (ONP), sardine landings have fallen by 46% in two years, from 965,000 tonnes in 2022 to 525,000 tonnes in 2024.
It is worth noting that Morocco is the world's leading producer of frozen sardines. This fish is a staple food for Moroccans.
