Côte d’Ivoire : Le député malien, Mahamadou Hawa Gassama, condamné à 3 ans de prison
Bad news for Malian MP Mahamadou Hawa Gassama. The Abidjan-Plateau Court of First Instance sentenced him on Friday, January 30, to three years in prison for "insulting" and "making outrageous statements online" against Alassane Ouattara, President of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. He will also have to pay a fine of 5 million CFA francs.
Ouattara, "enemy of Mali"
The court also decided to ban him from entering Ivorian territory for a period of three years, once he has finished serving his sentence.
As a reminder, this member of the National Transitional Council was arrested in July 2025 upon his return from a trip to Séguéla (a city in northwestern Ivory Coast). He was accused of remarks made in September 2022 during an interview with a Malian media outlet. In this interview, Mahamadou Hawa Gasssama called the Ivorian president "an enemy of Mali."
