Côte d’Ivoire : le tambour parleur Djidji Ayôkwé enfin restitué après 110 ans
After more than a century of absence, the talking drum Djidji Ayôkwé was officially returned by France to Ivory Coast on Friday, February 20, 2026, during a ceremony held at the Musée du quai Branly, in the presence of the Ministers of Culture of both countries.
Seized in 1916 by French colonial troops during raids on the Atchan people, this imposing sacred instrument weighs over 400 kg and is nearly 4 meters long, decorated with a leopard.
Back in Abidjan, Djidji Ayôkwé will become the centerpiece of the Museum of Civilizations of Ivory Coast, which is scheduled to reopen this year.
