Coup d’Etat en Guinée Bissau : Le message ferme de Fernando Dias Da Costa à Embalo et à l'armée
In Bissau, while the country calmly awaited the presidential election results, outgoing President Umaro Sissoko Embaló announced a coup and his own arrest by a group of soldiers. Fernando Dias Da Costa, a candidate in the election, reacted.
"Our country has long suffered from the actions of its political class and the army. We will not accept that our victory, after so many sacrifices, be confiscated through well-planned schemes," he insisted after his discussion with election observers.
The opposition leader stated that after compiling the results from all polling stations, his coalition emerged victorious. "I therefore eagerly await confirmation from the Independent Electoral Commission. Once my victory is proclaimed, I will fully assume my duties as Head of State," he said.
Da Costa points to a clear intention on the part of the outgoing President and the army to destabilize the country. He addressed a message to Embalò: "I want to reassure him. Guinea-Bissau remains his country, just like his predecessor José Mário Vaz; nothing will happen to him. His safety is guaranteed."
