Coup d'État en Guinée-Bissau : Les exigences fermes de la CEDEAO
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the military coup perpetrated in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, which interrupted the electoral process just days after the presidential and legislative elections of November 23, 2025.
In a strongly worded statement, the Presidency of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS declared: “This unconstitutional action constitutes a serious violation of the constitutional order of Guinea-Bissau and represents a direct threat to the stability of the country and the wider region,” the statement read.
The regional organization reaffirmed its "strict zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government," in accordance with its Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
ECOWAS Arrests and Demands
The ECOWAS Authority said it was "deeply concerned" by reports of the arrest of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, as well as senior officials and electoral staff.
Consequently, ECOWAS has formulated several clear demands. It calls for the immediate and unconditional release of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, senior officials, and electoral staff, as well as full guarantees for their physical safety and integrity. It also insists on the resumption of the electoral process, which “must resume and conclude without obstruction or interference.”
Finally, she stresses that the perpetrators of the coup bear the "individual and collective responsibility" for the safety and well-being of all detainees.
A call for calm and restraint.
In this context of high post-election tension, the Presidency of the Authority urged all political actors, civil society and the general public to remain calm, to show the utmost restraint and to avoid any action likely to exacerbate tensions or compromise national stability.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all stakeholders in safeguarding peace and democracy, assuring that it will continue to monitor developments in order to defend the "democratic aspirations and legitimate interests of the people of Guinea-Bissau," it reassured.
