Coup d'Etat en Guinée-Bissau: rues quasi-désertes et sous surveillance militaire dans la capitale
The streets of Guinea-Bissau's capital were almost deserted and under military surveillance on Thursday, AFP journalists observed, the day after a coup that overthrew the outgoing president and suspended the ongoing elections, and which remains shrouded in many unanswered questions.
Military personnel on duty were patrolling the entire area around the presidential palace on Thursday morning, where heavy gunfire had created panic among the population at midday the previous day, when the coup began.
Only a few passersby were visible on the main thoroughfare leading to the palace, AFP journalists observed. Schoolchildren, usually walking to school, were not seen Thursday morning.
Military patrols monitored the capital overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, AFP journalists observed.
On Wednesday, the military announced they had taken "total control of the country", arrested outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and suspended the ongoing electoral process, as the country awaited the results of the presidential and legislative elections held on November 23.
The official provisional results were expected this Thursday.
A "High Command for the Restoration of Order" has taken "the direction of the country until further notice", General Denis N'Canha, head of the presidential military household, announced to the press on Wednesday, seated behind a table and surrounded by armed soldiers.
According to a military source, an official installation of an official from this "High Military Command" is expected on Thursday.
Guinea-Bissau, a small coastal country in West Africa located between Senegal and Guinea (Conakry), has already experienced four coups d'état and a host of attempted coups since its independence in 1974.
This is also a new coup in West Africa, which has already seen a series of them since 2020 in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Guinea-Conakry.

un veritable cirque comme on peut en voir dans tous les feuilletons africains. Je me fais faire prisonnier par mes gars et fin nette du processus electoral. On confisque donc le pouvoir avec un semblant de tragedie et on le garde tranquillement. Ce pays n'vancera jamais; voila pourquoi le senegal est rempli comme un oeuf avec les guineens ...
Les gens ont des resources à gogo mais veulent creer la terreur et faire fuir leurs populations. AInsi ils vendent leurs pays aux explorateurs. C'est trop triste pour ce continent . J'imagine Dieu dans une colere particuliere pour avoir tout donné aux africains mais ils sont restés egoistes et meme betes. J'aurais souhaité etre un "non black" pour injurier les noirs mais bon ...

Je remercie les militaires Bissau guinéen qui ont écarté ce Tartuffe de Omar embalo sectariste, ethnicité et dictateur sans aucun niveau intellectuel. Il avait divisé les Bissau guinéen comment écarté le paigc qui a conduit le pays à l'indépendance
