Des mercenaires d'Afrique du Sud combattant en Ukraine appellent leur gouvernement à l'aide
The South African government has received pleas for help from 17 of its citizens who joined the ranks of mercenaries fighting in the Ukrainian region of Donbass and are asking to be repatriated, the South African presidency said on Thursday.
Mercenaries, some of whom come from several African countries, are participating on both sides in the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Authorities have "received distress calls from 17 South Africans, aged 20 to 39, seeking assistance to return home and who are stuck in war-torn Donbass," the presidency said in a statement.
Those involved were "lured by lucrative work contracts to join mercenary forces involved in the war between Ukraine and Russia".
The statement does not clearly indicate which side these men are fighting on in Donbass, a vast area in eastern Ukraine bordering Russia, where Ukrainian and Russian forces are clashing.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation into the recruitment of South Africans into mercenary activities, according to the presidency.
South African law prohibits citizens of the country from joining foreign armies, except with government authorization.
