In Guinea, the demobilization of workers at the Simandou project is intensifying. This colossal project, which includes Africa's largest iron ore mine, a railway line several hundred kilometers long and a mineral port, had reached a peak of approximately 60,000 jobs in the last two years.
But more than a month after the inauguration of the megaproject, on November 11, 2025, thousands of Guineans now find themselves without jobs.
According to several sources, this is a “classic” post-construction demobilization, but the scale of the project makes the figures impressive.
On the side of Rio Tinto, the Anglo-Australian mining company involved in Simandou, around 5,000 workers have been "released" in stages.
"That's half of what was expected," says a source close to the matter.
A reassessment of the risks would have led to a modification of the departure plan, with the postponement of certain site deliveries.
This is particularly the case at the mineral port of Morebayah, in southeastern Maritime Guinea, where no demobilization is planned before December 2026 at Rio Tinto.
This revision would also be linked to a "strategic alignment" with the government, in the lead-up to the presidential election on December 28.
On the side of the Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS) — the Sino-Singaporean conglomerate partner in the project —, no official figures have been released.
However, according to several accounts, thousands of workers have lost their jobs since June. Their section of the mineral port is now complete, as are the railway lines.
Along this railway line, nearly 10,000 workers, mainly based in the Faranah region, were tasked with digging a major tunnel through the mountain and constructing several bridges.
These workers have now finished their contracts and find themselves unemployed, according to local sources.

Rien n'a changé.
