Gabon : Michel Régis Onanga Ndiaye élu président de l’Assemblée nationale
On Monday, November 17, 2025, the National Assembly held elections for its members in a closed session, in accordance with Resolution No. 001 of February 4, 2013, concerning the rules of procedure of the National Assembly. This significant political event saw the election of Michel Régis Onanga Ndiaye, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and representative for the 1st constituency of the Etimboué department in the Ogooué-Maritime province.
It must be said that Michel Régis Onanga Ndiaye was elected president of the National Assembly thanks to broad support from his political party, the Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), which holds approximately 70% of the seats in the upper house of Parliament. This result is not surprising given the growing influence of the presidential party within the Gabonese political landscape.
Born on September 28, 1966, in Port-Gentil, Michel Régis Onanga Ndiaye is a career diplomat. With a strong academic background, he holds a postgraduate degree in political science from the René Descartes University in Paris. His education and experience have enabled him to hold several prominent international positions, notably as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Gabon to Senegal, with jurisdiction over several countries in the sub-region.
Prior to his ministerial role, he served as an advisor to the President of the 59th UN General Assembly in 2005 and at the Permanent Mission of Gabon to the United Nations in New York, first as First Counselor, then as Minister-Counselor. His expertise in international affairs and his fluency in English make him a key player in Gabonese diplomacy.
The election of Michel Régis Onanga Ndiaye as Speaker of the National Assembly represents not only recognition of his political and diplomatic career, but also a significant turning point for the country, which can expect a dynamic legislature and governance focused on regional development and integration. Married and a father, he embodies values of commitment and competence that will undoubtedly influence his term. This election thus marks a significant milestone in his career, propelling him toward new challenges as Speaker of the National Assembly.
