Gambie : Un ancien soldat arrêté après des affirmations sur un complot d’assassinat ayant visé Barrow
In Gambia, former army officer Abdoulie Sanyang was arrested on Sunday, August 17, at Banjul airport as he attempted to board a flight back to Switzerland, where he resides. According to a statement from the Ministry of Information, the former soldier was "first detained at the airport police station before being handed over to the Criminal Intelligence Bureau and Interpol for routine background checks."
He allegedly bribed agents loyal to Jammeh to abandon the assassination plan.
Mr. Sanyang's arrest came after an explosive interview he gave to Peter Gomez, the star host of West Coast Radio's "Coffee Time," in which the former soldier claimed to have helped prevent an assassination attempt on the current Gambian president, who was then a presidential candidate in 2016.
He said he bribed agents loyal to former President Jammeh to abandon the assassination plan against Barrow during a political rally in Bakau. He also claimed to have played a leading role in the burning of the APRC's political bureau headquarters.
Statements with significant implications for national security
Sanyang is currently in custody at the Brusubi Criminal Investigation Department, where he has previously been questioned about his comments on West Coast Radio. Gambian intelligence services consider his statements to have significant implications for national security.
