Gbagbo à Ouattara : « On n’est pas dépendant de l'Elysée, je n’accepte pas qu’on joue avec notre indépendance »
Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo held a massive rally yesterday, Saturday, August 16, in Yopougon (a commune in the Abidjan district). In front of thousands of supporters, the leader of the PPA-CI strongly protested President Alassane Ouattara's candidacy for a fourth term .
"Why would someone serve four terms in Ivory Coast here? Why? I refuse, I refuse, I refuse... I would like you to go and tell him that he will not serve a fourth term," Laurent Gbagbo told the crowd, not without reproaching the leader for his connections with France.
"So he's thinking about the Elysée?"
Indeed, according to the former president, it was after a trip to Paris that Ouattara truly formalized his candidacy for a 4th term.
"The RHDP meets and asks the head of state to be its candidate. But the head of state tells them: 'I understand, I'm going to think about it.' And he takes the plane, he goes to France. And when he returns to the Elysée and leaves the Elysée, he takes the plane, he returns to Abidjan, and the next day, he tells us: 'I will be a candidate.' So, is it at the Elysée that he thinks? Is it at the Elysée that he takes the answers to give to his activists and to Côte d'Ivoire? I don't accept that," Laurent Gbagbo blurted out.
For him, his country is "not dependent on the Elysée." "I do not accept that our independence is played with in such a caricatured way," the head of the PPA-CI insisted.
