Guinée-Bissau: le principal opposant, Domingos Simoes, arrêté par des "hommes armés" (proche collaborateur)
Guinea-Bissau opposition leader Domingos Simoes Pereira, who was barred from Sunday's presidential election, was arrested Wednesday by "armed men" according to relatives and an associate, as the military announced they had seized power in the country, which has a history of coups and attempted putschs.
Mr. Pereira, leader of the powerful PAIGC, the historic party that led Guinea-Bissau to independence, was barred from the presidential race for submitting his application too late. He subsequently endorsed the candidacy of Fernando Dias, who claims victory in the presidential election and whose fate remained uncertain late Wednesday afternoon.
"He is not safe because they arrested him," a member of Mr. Pereira's family told AFP, who was unable to specify who was behind the arrest.
